Current Projects

The Derek Bailey Foundation have now agreed to help with a near by community in Gunjur with their project on the prevention of Malaria.

Background

Gunjur is a large coastal fishing and farming town on the Atlantic Coast of the Gambia. It has a population of about 15,000 inhabitants and like the rest of the country, majority of the population are under the age of 30. Gunjur has a health centre, a primary school, a secondary school, a market and three nursery schools. It is located 45 Kilometres or 30 minutes drive from Banjul, the Capital of the Gambia and also Senegambia, the main Tourist area. The main activity in Gunjur is fishing and farming, which provides employment and livelihood for majority of the population.

The programme has adopted a multi pronged approach combining health, education, social mobilisation for environmental cleansing to coincide with the national mass bed net dipping.

It will start with a baseline survey through out Gunjur to determine:
• the number of beds
• number of beds with nets
• number of people who sleep under nets
• reasons for non use of nets
• review of Health Centre records regarding all cases of Malaria

We are currently working in partnership with Gunjur Sartay Kafo, a legally registered Non Government Organisation in The Gambia.
