Nyofelleh is a principal village in a catchment area of villages some 30 kilometres from Banjul the capital of The Gambia , an independent country of around 1.6 million people

Politically, The Gambia is a republic under western style democratic rule and has been stable for some time. There are long term Economic Development Programmes with an emphasis on export, tourism and improvements to the infrastructure. But as the basic resources of the country are very limited progress is inevitably slow.

As in many African countries the bulk of the population is poor with earnings of maybe around £500 a year, more or less - for those that have a job. It's hard for the visitor to imagine how they manage.

From the very beginning the Foundation has made many visits to talk with the villagers about their way of life and to understand it

The villagers have been fully involved in the planning and building of both the School and the Medical Clinic

There are no surfaced roads to Nyofelleh or in the village. It's right in the middle of the country and very rural. During the rainy season getting around is particularly difficult.

But it is a structured community. There is a village committee, order to be kept, work to be done, visits to friends, and so on.

Above all the visitor will be impressed by how the people make the best of what little they have...and there is always a friendly smile.
